The walls of a house are an important aspect when it comes to decoration. One can either choose a painting or wallpapering as a way of making the house attractive. However, the two methods have got advantages and disadvantages.

Preparation of the Wall

One needs to do proper preparation for the wall before painting and wallpapering. This step is far much important if the wall has other existing paints and wallpapers. However, for a new wall, one does not need to do any preparation. If the wall to be painted has existing cracks, then imperfections should be prepared using spackle. The wall is then left for 24 hours to allow it dry.

The Advantages of Painting

  • The paint lasts longer as compared to wallpapers. The paint serves for a long time before changing it, therefore, helps one save an extra amount of money which could have been used in regular maintenance and replacement.
  • Painting is not time-consuming as compared to wallpapering. This is because by applying primer paint in advance makes one’s painting preparation easier as the paint becomes light.
  • It is convenient to use paints especially in areas that require a cheap and easy application. For instance, semi-gloss to high gloss paints are long-lasting are supposed to be applied in areas such as exterior doors, trim, and many others.

The Disadvantages of Painting

  • It is not convenient to use paints on walls that are damaged or scrapped off since the paint tends to chip in. in such a scenario, one needs to repair it and sometimes it is expensive and tedious.
  • Some brands of paints come with an unpleasant smell. Upon applying on the walls, it normally takes some days for the smell to wear out.

The Advantages of Wallpapering

  • The wallpapers can be conveniently used in damaged walls. One is not required to repair the walls reducing the working time and expenses.
  • Wallpapers do not have any choking smell, therefore, pleasant to use.
  • The wallpapers are also durable. They tend to resist both wear and tear, thus last longer. This enables one to save money that could have been used in repair and replacement.

Disadvantages of Wallpapering

  • Removing the existing wallpapers is a tedious and time-consuming process. The right tools should be used to avoid damaging the wall.
  • The wallpapers are fixed using adhesives. The high level of moisture in kitchens and bathrooms can make the wallpaper to peel away from the wall.

Wallpapers or paints can be used to decorate the walls. Both methods have got advantages and disadvantages. One needs to consider the areas where the decorations have to be made. For instance, it is advisable to use paints in kitchens and bathrooms due to their high moisture levels. Paints on the hand can be applied in walls where there is low moisture content.
