The time taken to renovate a whole home is a very relative aspect. It depends on the size of the home, the people working on it, and the tools available. Whether you Are a homeowner, you flip houses you need to have a good estimation of how long a renovation would take. It helps you to budget for the renovation.

We are going to explore the various aspects of a home renovation that affect the time taken to renovate a home. In order to put everything into perspective, we’ll categorize home renovations into three parts. They are cosmetic renovations, medium renovations and full renovations.

Cosmetic Renovations

Cosmetic renovations, as the name suggests, deal with the aesthetics of the home only, and will most likely not go behind the walls, above the ceilings, or under the floors. These include things such as painting, changing light fixtures, changing appliances and changing furniture.

These can be done in hours, a couple of days or a couple of weeks depending on how much has to be done, and how many people are available to do the work.

Medium Renovations

These are renovations that go a bit deeper than just the surface, but they do not cover the whole house. These might include revamping electric, plumbing, and HVAC systems. They might also feature works on the insulation of the home. Roofing works might also be featured in medium renovations.

These are a bit more complex and will require professionals in most instances.  Such works can take anywhere from a day to a month depending on how much work has to be done. When you hire a contractor, they are able to tell you how long the work should take. You can negotiate with them to have more people on the job so that it is completed faster.

Full Renovation

A full renovation involves revamping the whole house. It includes works on the structural building, home systems, and finishing and decoration work. A full renovation is almost like tearing down the whole house and rebuilding it again. A full renovation involves inspecting the structural integrity of the building, revamping all the systems, and redecorating the whole house.

A full renovation will take anywhere between one month and 12 months depending on the size of the house. You will need a building contractor for such works. The contractor you hire can provide an exact duration over which the works will be done.

These duration estimates assume that works are done continuously without interruption. Obviously, the size of the home makes a huge difference. Either way, a larger home would need more people working on it. You need to have a serious sit down with your contractor and agree on how long the project should take. Ensure the contract you sign reflects that agreement.
